This section covers character traits and qualities required by security dog personnel who wish to be successful dog handlers

A description of the duties of a SCWD and the areas of service that they cater for

Section 3 Formal Training

The curriculum of formal training and skill levels require for the licensing of a Security Dog handler

Section 4 On-the-Job Training

Outlines active-duty training and field exercise requirements of the trainee

Chapter 3 Security Dogs

Section 1 The German Shepherd Dog

Encompasses choice of breed, attributes and conformation

Section 2 Specification for Sentry Dogs

This section instructs on identification of attributes necessary in the selection of dogs suited to the program

How and where to procure the appropriate animals

Chapter 4 Training

Section 1 Behavior and Instinct of Dogs

An understanding of dog behavior based on their animal instincts, sensory perception and attributes, physiology, intelligence and motivation

Section 2 General Principles of Dog Training

A practical knowledge of how dogs' mentality operates, what specific training methods are required and how to monitor and evaluate the dog's proficiency

Section 3 Basic Obedience Training

Basic commands and obedience training including evaluation of skills and assessment of proficiency of dog and handler to achieve complete cooperation and control

Section 4 Advanced Obedience, Agitation and Attack Training

Instruction in obedience exercises performed without a leash. This incorporates teaching dogs to show aggression, attack and bite independently and on command, distrust strangers and become acclimatized to gunfire

Section 5 Obstacle Course

Construction of an obstacle course for providing practical exercises for training dogs to overcome structural obstacles, changing surfaces, heights, varying terrain as well as improve levels of physical fitness, agility and endurance

Section 6 Utilization and Care of Equipment

This section covers use and maintenance of a wide range of leads, tethers, muzzles and equipment used for training, working, grooming and animal care.

Section 7 Continuous Training Program

Incorporates instruction in establishing, scheduling and implementation of an ongoing training regimen for constantly maintaining proficiency of the dog and handler

Section 8 Elective Training

An optional extended training program for handlers who wish to raise their standard of proficiency and discipline as well as that of their dog

Section 9 Standards of Proficiency

Standards to assist Kennel Master and Trainers, Supervisory personnel in evaluating the proficiency of security dog units under their jurisdiction.

Chapter 5 Health, Care and Feeding

Section 1 Grooming and Care

Instruction on daily grooming and maintenance for appearance and hygiene as well as inspection of the dogs anatomy.

Section 2 First Aid and Veterinary Support

Instruction on preventative health care, first aid and the treatment of common ailments, injuries, accidents and diseases including guidelines regarding requirements for veterinary intervention

Section 3 Nutrition and Feeding

Complete guidance and training regarding the dogs digestive system, nutritional requirements, food types, meal preparation, rationing and feeding regimen

Chapter 6 Utilization of Sentry Dogs

Section 1 Sentry Dog Flight

Encompasses the organisation, structure and personnel requirements of security dog operations and facilities as well as logistics, schedules and ongoing training

Section 2 Principles of Utilisation

Covers use of equipment and resources, deployment of manpower and animals, deployment strategies, standing orders and procedures, visible warnings, signboards and the principles of all aspects of utilisation of security dogs and associated equipment.

Section 3 Areas of Utilisation

Describes various areas of application as well as specific site types and environments for the deployment of security guard dogs

Chapter 7 Logistical support and Administration

Section 1 Kennels and Runs

Specific directions regarding the location and construction of housing and facilities including design, materials, water, lighting, fire protection, sanitation and signboards as well as kenneling

Section 2 Equipment and Supplies

Training regarding the allowance for, allocation, issue and supply, and installation of equipment in security dog facilities in accordance with security company policies

Section 3 Records

Encompasses the creation, maintenance issue and filing of all required documentation including permanent records such as security dog service records and temporary records such as feeding charts, weight records, deployment schedules and utilization records
